“Fire Falling” by Elise Kova – Hello Character Growth!

Catching Up

Fire Falling is book two of the Air Awakens series. It is part of the same world as The Golden Guard, Vortex Chronicles, and A Trial of Sorcerers. Chronologically speaking, Air Awakens is the first series of the world with The Golden Guard playing the equivalent of episodes 1-3 of Star Wars.

Elise Kova has stated many times that each series can be read on its own, but if you’re looking for the full experience of the kingdom of Solaris from start to finish, start with the Air Awakens series.

Sprouting Like a Daisy

Vhalla Yarl has undergone a major change since her Awakening as a sorcerer in book one and is starting to show who she can become. The relationship between her and Aldrik, the crown prince, very much hit me as being similar to Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy (Pride & Prejudice). The two had their preconceived notions of the other with little to no understanding of why the other acted in the way they did. Their communication skills needed an overhaul to the highest degree. That is luckily where book two comes in!

About 98% of the environment was the journey from the capital city of Solaris to the northern territory that houses the main antagonists of the story – people that I find we still know very little about. There is a phrase that comes to mind with Fire FallingIt isn’t the destination, but the journey along the way….or something like that… Nonetheless, that rings true!

I won’t ruin the plot twists and the details of the large events that triggered the creation of a new proverbial chapter in Vhalla’s life, but each one definitely caused me to have some big feelings. Some books like this can be seen as exposition and unnecessary to the plot at large.

Thankfully, Elise Kova has managed to debunk that notion with Fire Falling.

Meeting Elise Kova (Again)

I had the privilege to meet Elise Kova at a book signing very much near my work and home on May 18, 2024. Dominique Richardson was also present and coordinated the interview with Elise who graciously answered questions from the fellow author and the crowd. I did not ask any questions, but spoke with her when getting two of my books signed.

I do not want to spoil any of the dynamics between characters right now if you are interested in reading any of the Air Awakens series. Though I will disclose that my question did involve asking about inspiration of characters compared to existing people in the world.

Below are the other reviews for the rest of the series

Currently Playing and Upcoming Games

I am getting to the end of Hogwarts Legacy – it has been a fun run! (As of May 10th, 2024)

I do have a few games in mind to play next such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (has the most tie in to famous classical works), Bioshock (has a prequel novelization where the author combined cannon information and creative freedom), or Spider-Man (multitude of comics and many of those villains are referenced or fought during the gameplay).

Feel free to follow my channel (link below) on Twitch to stay up-to-date on gaming, what I am reading, and interacting with me live!
